Vitalik Buterin, the Ethereum co-creator, has converted yet another $1.6M worth of meme coins into Ether (ETH).
According to the report by Spot On Chain, the meme coins Vitalik converted into Ether included Moo Deng (MOODENG), Monsterra (MSTR), ETHEREUM IS GOOD (EBULL), and Popcat.
Vitalik Buterin Converted Another $1.6M Worth Of Meme Coins Into Ether For Charity Donations
On Sunday, October 13, 2024, Spot On Chain, the popular blockchain analytics firm, noted in an X post that Vitalik sold another eight meme coins for 651.6 ETH, which was worth $1.62M.
The post revealed that the eight sold tokens are 10B $MOODENG for 395.95 ETH, 200K $MSTR for 93.23 ETH, 500M $EBULL for 73.79 ETH, 15M $POPCAT for 27.11 ETH, 31.4T $FWOG for 22.53 ETH, 20B $Milo for 20.75 ETH, 500.1K $TCATI for 12.81 ETH, and 201.9M $VITALIK for 5.49 ETH.
The previous day, Saturday, Spot On Chain reported that Vitalik acquired 257.11 $ETH (~$633K) by selling six meme coins, namely $MSTR, $POPCAT, $ITO, $ETH6900, $SATO, and $Milo.
With this move, Vitalik has altogether acquired 1,101 ETH, which is worth about $2.78M, by selling meme coins in the last nine days. He reportedly donated 360.16 ETH (~$884K) to charities, Spot On Chain revealed.
However, Vitalik has yet to indicate whether this recent conversion is going for charity donations. Though he revealed earlier that he would donate all the proceeds from Layer 2 (L2) and mem coin project tokens to charities or ETH ecosystem projects.
Prior to this move, Vitalik had praised meme coin issuers for sending him tokens to donate, but he suggested that these issuers donate the funds directly to charities rather than sending the coins to him.
In an X post on October 7, Vitalik stated that he was donating all 10B meme coins he received to an organization working on anti-airborne disease technology.
On August 15, Vitalik reportedly splashed out all the animal-themed meme coins he had received over the last 12 months, converted to 200 ETH (~$532,000) to the Effective Altruism Funds, an animal welfare charity.
A few days later, he also splashed about $1.05M (400 ETH) on RAILGUN.
Should We Expect More Donations
Data from Spot On Chain revealed that Vitalik’s $700M crypto portfolio still consists of $2.4M in $MOODENG tokens, $144K in $NEIRO, $117K in $MSTR, and $80K in $DEGEN).
Considering Vitalik’s recent explanations that he would not sell crypto for personal gains but for supporting charities and ETH projects, we may conclude that the meme coins remaining in his crypto portfolio would go for charity donation soon.
Vitalik has long believed that meme coins can contribute meaningfully to society by funding important public projects or even allowing people from lower-income countries to earn a living.
Meanwhile, he recently slammed celebrity-themed meme coins launched to enrich the celebrity and early investors.
