Emirates Accepts Crypto Payments

Emirates has started accepting crypto payments for flights. In 2025, the airline transported 55.6 million passengers, the largest number of international passengers transported by any airline in the world.

The new option was launched on 28 July. It is integrated into Crypto.com Pay and is accessible on the Emirates website and app.

How The Crypto Payments Work

It is currently available only to UAE residents who have an account on Crypto.com. Bookings are also to be priced and paid for in UAE dirhams (AED).

Outline
  • How The Crypto Payments Work
  • Part Of A Bigger UAE Push
  • Significance of This For Crypto Adoption

This is the part most coverage leaves out. Emirates does not actually deal with crypto.

All payments are converted to Dirhams before they are received by the airline, according to Emirates’ explanation of how the deal works. Customers use digital currency; Emirates gets cash.

The system is operated via the Dubai arm of Crypto.com. The UAE Central Bank’s regulatory approval track, which makes this type of payment integration possible, is the same one that has issued that entity’s first Stored Value Facilities license to a dirham-pegged stablecoin issuer.

Part Of A Bigger UAE Push

This launch didn’t happen overnight. Emirates and Crypto.com first signed a memorandum of understanding back in July 2025, and it took about a year to go live.

Dubai has been aggressively moving towards digital payments. That’s why the UAE continues to appear on lists of the world’s most crypto-friendly countries, as the city’s Cashless Strategy aims to achieve 90% of financial transactions across government and private sectors to be digital by the end of 2026.

Emirates isn’t the first UAE carrier to try this either. Air Arabia, the UAE’s national carrier, has been accepting payments via AE Coin, the UAE’s stablecoin, since 2024.

That regulatory framework is important for the way the rest of the crypto market interprets moves like this. It’s a similar situation to what has happened with Ripple, which has been granted a full MiCA license to operate throughout Europe, but has yet to launch any product.

Significance of This For Crypto Adoption

Emirates is a brand that’s renowned for luxury travel, not crypto experimentation. With onboard shower spas and private first-class suites, its A380 fleet is a real signal to put a crypto checkout button in front of, even with the dirham conversion in the middle.

The deal is a milestone for the company’s Pay product, according to Crypto.com’s president, Eric Anziani. For Crypto.com, it’s not necessarily about the amount of payments, as flights are only one category of purchases.

It’s about visibility. An airline with Emirates’ brand weight makes crypto payments normal, something that smaller merchant deals can’t.

The launch also follows a separate agreement between Crypto.com and Dubai Finance, which allows residents of the UAE to pay some government fees with digital assets. It’s the same licensing system that is used for the Emirates rollout, and it suggests that crypto payments will become more commonplace in Dubai’s economy rather than a one-off airline promotion.

For now, the option only covers UAE residents booking in dirhams. However, if Emirates rolls it out to additional markets and currencies, it could be one of the largest real-world crypto payment integrations ever by an airline.
